Primary School

A learning experience that engages all the senses

At the German School of Geneva, children aged 6 to 11 attend primary school. The lessons combine solid and fundamental knowledge with social skills and promote openness to language and culture. A particular focus of our pedagogical concept is bilingual literacy in German and French, which is taught by native-speaking teachers. Our school is characterised by collaboration:
Students, teachers and parents work together to create a vibrant school that is open to the world around it, attentive to individual needs and firmly rooted in its local community

Every child is at the centre of their own learning process. Their curiosity is awakened, their creativity encouraged and their independence strengthened day by day. Through an open, interdisciplinary and sensory approach, students develop academic, social and personal skills.
They learn with all their senses – through discovery, doing things collaboratively and active experimentation. Our teaching style respects the individual rhythm, pace and talents of each child while encouraging team spirit and mutual support. The school embraces both German culture and local diversity – also, amongst others, through immersive teaching and participation of Geneva festivals and traditions.

Our afternoon activities

In accordance with the German school model, lessons end at 13:10. Immediately afterwards, the children are looked after by the “atelier” team: a carer picks students up from their classroom, accompanies them to the canteen and to their activities thereafter. Until 5:45 pm, students can take part in a wide range of playful, sporting and creative workshops such as theatre, music, cooking, handicrafts and much more. An enriching framework for a different type of learnig and free development.

Academic school path

Does my child have to speak German to be enrolled?

No, prior knowledge of German is not required.
The language is acquired naturally in everyday school life through lessons, activities and social interactions.
Around 70% of lessons are taught in German and around 30% in French.
Children with little or no knowledge of German and/or French receive weekly support lessons

What are the lesson timetables?

In accordance with the German school system, compulsory lessons end at 1.10 pm.
This gives students the opportunity to develop their talents and pursue their interests – either in external establishments or as part of our varied afternoon activities that go until 5:45 pm.

Why does the primary school only start at the age of 6?

The German School of Geneva follows the German education system, in which primary school generally begins at the age of six. Before starting school, children attend preschool, which is specially designed to prepare them for the transition to primary school in a playful and age-orientated way. In preschool, social, linguistic, motor and cognitive skills are specifically promoted – in harmony with the children’s stage of development. In this way, we create a stable foundation for successful learning and a positive school experience from the first grade onwards

Support and inclusion of students with learning difficulties

Several instructors as well as a special needs teacher and a social pedagogue support children with special needs.
The support is customised to the individual situation – for example, for learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
Support is provided in close cooperation with the family and the specialists involved in order to promote the best possible development of each child
